Overview

Asked to travel back to the South in order to help out a small-town Junior League with the compilation of their cookbook, author Jackson Tippett McCrae finds that he's bitten off more than he can chew in this tale of odd recipes, social climbing, Southern customs, blackmail, murder, and mayhem. This tasty morsel, from the author of The Bark of the Dogwood-A Tour of Southern Homes and Gardens, will keep you flipping the pages in order to find out what each of the ladies of the Junior League are really up to when it comes to the cookbook they're planning. And the way the town's sheriff and his outcast lady-friend figure into the equation only serves to enhance this literary feast, as they become more than the side dishes they appear to be, and spice up the plot with more than the expected amount of gusto. With the usual twists and turns found in McCrae's books, Barring Some Unforeseen Accident is sure to please even those with the most discriminating taste.

What's the recipe for a good book? Take one New York author, throw in an invitation from five members of a Junior League to come South to help compile a cookbook, add one redneck sheriff, one town outcast, a host of people who've died suspiciously, combine with some mind-bending plot twists, and you've got one delicious (and disturbing) concoction that's sure to be a conversation starter at your next get-together. Such is the case with the latest Jackson Tippett McCrae novel, Barring Some Unforeseen Accident-a mixture of Southern Gothic, down-home fun, and small-town idiosyncrasies, all cooked together in this literary delight, that's sure to, well, if not please, at least keep you up all night.

Meet the Author

Read an Excerpt

For all Chalybeate Springs's lack of cell phones and modern auditory devices, they had the communications situation very much in hand when it came to spreading a rumor. It was almost telepathic, or tele-pathetic, if you will.

In order to test the pipeline at one point, I stated to Mrs. Weems, quite emphatically, that I had discovered the cure for cancer and was keeping it under wraps until I could release the news to the world when I got back to New York-that the whole thing was very hush-hush.

Nothing.

Not a word.

Then I pretended to let slip a small item that I had just maybe, just possibly, probably not, couldn't remember, might have, wasn't sure, but could have, maybe had sex at one point and gotten paid for it, though I had been drinking and possibly performed the act on a dare. The headline in the Chalybeate Springs Times the next day read: mccrae world's biggest whore and drunkard-syphilis sores visible to general public! author found naked in gutter-passed out!

    I Also Recommend:

Don't Try Any of These Recipes...

.but definitely read this book! Another bizarre and extremely funny book from Mr. McCrae. This thing had me laughing from the first page, yet there are also some genuinely sad passages that do make you think twice about hypocrisy and the way people are treated at times. This is my favorite book by Mr. McCrae, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who wants a good laugh and a story that keeps you hooked from page one!

    Fantastic

Hard to believe anyone could come up with a plot this good. Given the current political and social climete, its not surprising that some might not like it. Would give this ten stars if I could

    Punch drunk funny

This book had me rolling! McCrae's take on small towns in America is sharp and accurate. His characters are so original, yet familiar. The story is twisted beyond words and the most hilarious and entertaining thing I've read this year!

    A reviewer

I haven't laughed so much since Sedaris's books and this one is a novel with a nifty tie-up at the end. Actually it has several sub plots and really flies! Great fun though not suited for everyone.

VERY off the wall and funny

Have not read anything quite like this before. Much is very funny and much is very strange. The writing is a real treat and the characters are not like anyone you might know, or want to know. The best thing about this books is that you won't be able for to guess where it is going and how.

    An Enjoyable 'Amuse Bouche'

McCrae is a favorite of mine. This book is more flippant than his others--parts are almost verbal slapstick, yet there are also beautiful passages in it. Laugh out loud humor is mixed with poignant longing expressed on the part of some of the characters to be accepted for who they are. It is set in the South and racism, homophobia, and general intolerance are some of the themes touched upon, though always with McCrae's trademark humor. The book is written in the first person with Jackson Tippett McCrae as the narrator and his willingness to poke fun at himself is an added element for fans of his other books. 'Barring' is a lighter, faster read than 'Dogwood' or 'Katzenjammer'.

    Pitch perfect

This book is pitch-perfect. Hits all the right notes. I was amazed at how all the anagrams fit together in this fast moving mystery. Highly entertaining too.

    Funny from the first page

This is by far the best book McCrae has come up with. It's not as deep as his Dogwood book but has a more intricate anagram thread running through it. And it has more twists and turns in the way of plot. As is usual the idea for the book is unique. McCrae sets himself in the book as the author who is asked to travel to some (unknown) state in the Southern United States, in order to help a group of looney women put together their cookbook. The novel is very easy to read with still maintains a good literary sense and pace. Be sure to read the recipes that the junior league ladies have contributed as they are as funny as the rest of the book.
