I work in a prison and encourage young men to go for the gusto--to finally take themselves seriously and obtain their GED--to put something different on their record that says about them--I am not who I was--I am reaching to be a different man and live a better life than I have up to now! I attend our GED graduations and am always proud of these gruff young men who act so tough and uncaring, yet are so grateful to their teachers who have admonished, encouraged and just plain prodded them to succeed with something they never would have achieved before their incarceration. The Barron's GED manual is comprehensive, modestly priced for these young men and their families (around $20), and most important--is a light (really!) book to carry around in their dorms. Most young men have studiously avoided their education--some of them are 19 or 20 and are reading in the 3rd grade if they're lucky! You can believe that they are in special ed. classes or in general ed. and referred to attend resource room by their teachers who believe in their abilities and just want them to get more time to finish their tests. When I interview these young men, I tell them they have the "rusty brain" syndrome--they forgot what they learned and didn't learn what they needed to learn before they came here. Almost all of them want their GED, but they have to be encouraged to work for it any way they can--with other inmates' help and with the encouragement of their family outside, if they are lucky enough to have some that care. Honestly, I receive many calls from parents who tell me they are relieved that their son is finally required to attend school, and that's all he has to do right now--focus on his long-neglected education! Barron's is a concise guide for these young men, and easily accessible for their parents to buy and send to them. For the young people outside prison, I say--pay attention to your education; invest in yourself, and begin a learning process, wherever it may lead you, to a meaningful, independent and appropriately paid career. Our world and our country need you to be educated so that you can make the kinds of decisions to help our country and planet--and your children who will inherit your world! Go for it! This book is amazing. I had been out of school for 2 years, and took no GED classes, and passed with no problem. This book teaches you step by step on each subject. It's easy to understand, it explains wrong and right answers in detail, and its just everything you need to pass the GED plus more. It even has practice tests, I think it's better than going to actual classes.
