Overview

Set in the second half of the eighteenth century, Barry Lyndon is the fictional autobiography of an adventurer and rogue whom the reader is led to distrust from the very beginning. Born into the petty Irish gentry, and outmanoeuvred in his first love-affair, a ruined Barry joins the British army. After service in Germany he deserts and after a brief spell as a spy, pursues the career of a gambler in the dissolute clubs and courts of Europe. In a determined effort to enter fashionable society he marries a titled heiress but finds he has met his match. First published in 1844, Barry Lyndon is Thackeray's earliest substantial novel and in some ways his most original, reflecting his view of the true art of fiction: to represent a subject, however unpleasant, with accuracy and wit, and not to moralize. The text is that of George Saintsbury's 1908 Oxford edition which restores passages cut when the novel was revised in 1856.

Meet the Author

William Makepeace Thackeray was born in 1811 in Calcutta of Anglo-Indian parents. He was educated at English private schools and Cambridge but left without a degree. European travel was cut short by the loss of most of Thackeray's inheritance in 1833 in Indian bank failures, upon which he decided to make his living as a painter. Returning to London in 1837, he found himself with two young daughters and an insane wife by 1840 and forced to write for a living. Most of his early output was reviews, sketches, comic items or short serials for magazines, often under pseudonyms. His first novel, Barry Lyndon, was serialised in 1844, and Thackeray also published three travel books in the 1840s. His satiric vein and discontent with contemporary fictional norms led to his first major novel, Vanity Fair, in 1847, followed by a handful of other major novels over the next dozen years which turned from satiric to historical. Published lectures on the new field of English literature led to tours of the United States from 1852 and The Virginians, a novel set partly in America. Thackeray was a founding editor of the literary journal The Cornhill Magazine in 1859, but resigned due to ill-health in 1862, though his last works were published in the journal. He died in 1863.

    Summer - Oneshot

Summer. The time for romance. A slight wind blew as a blonde girl walked up the stars to a semi-big house. She knocked, knowing someone else in the world was doing this too. The door opened to reveal a handsome man out her height, brown eyes with matching hair and scruff. "I'm Erin, Arin's cousin?" She said. "Oh ueah! I'm Barry. Arin, Ross, and Suzie went out. Guess it's just you and me." He said, the two blushing. They went inside. Erin sat down on the couch awkwardly and looked around. Barry came back with snacks like chips. They talked, laughed, and watched TV. Barry gazed fondly at Erin, who was laughing at a racist joke on Family Guy. Without thinking, he paused the show and gently cupped her face. "Barry?" She saod innocently. "Shh." He said, slowly moving forward towards her. She fluttered her eyes closed and their lips interlocked. The kiss wasn't rough, but it was soft. It wasn't too soft, but it did the explaining for the two. Erin stroked his hair softly, blushing madly. Barry held her close. After a bit, they pulled apart and stared at each other. "Does this mean you-?" "Yes, Barry." Erin smiled warmly and pecked him again. Barry was over the top excited. He pulled her beside him and layed with her on one side. Erin fell asleep, locked in Barry's embrace. "You'll always be my summer love, Erin." He whispered. ~Present Day~ Barry looked back on memories of the two. Erin had died by cancer, which she was diagnosed wirh a few months after they met. He let a tear slip, remembering her spunky attitude and kindness. Arin gazed sadly at his mourning friend. "Barry, I miss her too." He said. "Not like I do." Barry said. Arin left him. Barry sighed, full out crying this time. "Barry, I'll always be you summer love." A voice whispered in his ear. He caught a glimpse of Erin in all her blonde glory before she disappeared. He smiled and slept peacefully in years.
