About the Book
"Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, often simply called Bartlett's, is an American reference work that is the longest-lived and most widely distributed collection of quotations.

The book arranges its entries by author, rather than by subject, as many other quotation collections, and enters the authors chronologically by date of birth rather than alphabetically. Within years, authors are arranged alphabetically and quotations are arranged chronologically within each author's entry, followed by "attributed" remarks whose source in the author's writings has not been confirmed. The book contains a thorough keyword index and details the source of each quotation." -- Wikipedia

    don't buy!

Every time I tried to open it my NOOK would freeze up. I finally had to delete it for my NOOK to function properly again. I really wanted to give it -5 stars.

    Broken

Until this book is fixed, do not purchase. It is either incomplete (it appears to contain only the book cover) or it is formatted incorrectly (the content won't display).

    Start Your Title Search Here

If you're looking for a title to your novel or original screenplay, start with this exhaustive compilation of the great quotations of the world. Another reason to use it is to find out whether it was Mark Twain or H. L. Mencken who first said dotty things about California!

Don't bother with the Nook version

I was excited to have my old friend in the Nook version but was disappointed to find it cumbersome an difficult to use. Give me pages to turn for this book. I have other reference books in the Nook version and found Bartlette's to be an exception - not Nook friendly.

    Don't buy

I made the mistake of ignoring the other reviews. The book freezes up whenever you try to open it. Even restarting the Nook will not help.

    Highly Recommended!!!

Any serious writer, and even those not so serious, will benefit by having this book as a handy reference. I keep my copy close to the computer and use it often. I can't imagine not having it in my own personal library.

This is a very necessary resource volume for the discriminating reader.

I have repeatedly used a previous edition and purchased this for a niece and great niece to have as a resource for everyday quotation questions.
It is an essential library addition.

Great, but not worth buying for use.

This book is excelent, but most libraries have it, so just go there.

    This belongs on EVERY bookshelf.

This is one of those books that everyone should have on their bookshelf. There's a quote for everything and its fun to just look through to pass the time.

    A good thing gone bad....

The recent revision is certainly 'timely'. I can only say that it has abandoned the original concept...which was to provide a 'bank' of cultural reference. What I particularly object to is the emphasis on cultural iconography over real content. I own many former editions of this work. Rarely do those editions take such a cheap-shot approach. To illustrate; while a famous lyricist of the 1940's might be included, rarely would the inclusion be a simple regurgitation of his/her well-known lyrics. I have read many interviews, over the years, with Mick Jagger of the rock band the Rolling Stones. While I didn't always agree with him, it was clear that he was intelligent and thoughtful. It is said that the band Led Zeppelin took their name from an ironic adaptation of a comment by Jagger. When told of the proposed line-up of the band, and asked what he thought of it, he is said to have said 'That ought to go over like a lead zepplin'. Apochryphal? Perhaps so. But it is just this kind of real 'meat' that this new edition is lacking. Instead, under 'Mick Jagger', we are spoon-fed ' I can't get no satisfaction...' Come on! Can't the editors do any better than THAT!?
