Familiar Quotations A collection of passages, phrases, and proverbs traced to their sources in ancient and modern literature.
Authors appear chronologically in the order of their birth dates; authors born in the same year are arranged alphabetically. The quotations for each author are generally in chronological order according to the date of publication (in some instances according to the date of composition). Poetry generally precedes prose for authors who wrote both.
Each quotation has a source line supplying title, date (most often that of publication) and any other helpful information.
The Index of authors provides birth and death dates and the page number for the quotations by each author, as well as the page numbers for any additional quotations by that author in the footnotes.
To find a particular book of the Bible, see the Bible entry, where the books are listed alphabetically. The same is true for Shakespeare; to find any work, consult the Shakespeare entry.
The Bartlett index is arranged by keywords, not topics.
Sixteenth Edition

If you're looking for a title to your novel or original screenplay, start with this exhaustive compilation of the great quotations of the world. Another reason to use it is to find out whether it was Mark Twain or H. L. Mencken who first said dotty things about California!

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations is back in its 17th edition better then ever. It continues its tradition of being one of the best refrence books avaliable. Whether your a student or not Bartlett's Quotations is a great book for pleasure or study.

Any serious writer, and even those not so serious, will benefit by having this book as a handy reference. I keep my copy close to the computer and use it often. I can't imagine not having it in my own personal library.

I have repeatedly used a previous edition and purchased this for a niece and great niece to have as a resource for everyday quotation questions.
It is an essential library addition.

This is one of those books that everyone should have on their bookshelf. There's a quote for everything and its fun to just look through to pass the time.
