Overview

More than 150 years after its original publication, BARTLETT'S FAMILIAR QUOTATIONS has been completely revised and updated for its eighteenth edition. BARTLETT'S showcases a sweeping survey of world history, from the times of ancient Egyptians to present day. New authors include Warren Buffett, the Dalai Lama, Bill Gates, David Foster Wallace, Emily Post, Steve Jobs, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Krugman, Hunter S. Thompson, Jon Stewart, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Barack Obama, Che Guevara, Randy Pausch, Desmond Tutu, Julia Child, Fran Leibowitz, Harper Lee, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Patti Smith, William F. Buckley, and Robert F. Kennedy. In the classic BARTLETT'S tradition, the book offers readers and scholars alike a vast, stunning representation of those words that have influenced and molded our language and culture.

Editorial Reviews

This is not your grand dad's Bartlett's. The most substantial revision in this reference standard contains more than 2,500 new quotations including fresh snippets from Jimi Hendrix, Bill Gates, Julia Child, Hunter S. Thompson, Patti Smith, Barack Obama, Jon Stewart, and Paul Krugman.

Library Journal
Brought to you by Library of America editor in chief O'Brien, this 18th edition of the immortal Bartlett's includes 2500 new quotes and more than 800 newcomers, from Julia Child to David Foster Wallace. Quotes have been culled to bring in more foreigners and women and more material from fiction and poetry; a companion app brings this chestnut into the 21st century. My favorite featured quote, from Walter Benjamin: "Books and harlots have their quarrels in public."

If you're looking for a title to your novel or original screenplay, start with this exhaustive compilation of the great quotations of the world. Another reason to use it is to find out whether it was Mark Twain or H. L. Mencken who first said dotty things about California!

I have repeatedly used a previous edition and purchased this for a niece and great niece to have as a resource for everyday quotation questions. It is an essential library addition.
