Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carollyne Hutter
Baseball is a game of numbers: four bases, nine innings, three strikes, and so on. This early reader teaches about baseball while beginning readers develop reading skills and learn math. Using photographs of children playing baseball, the books shows the basics of the game. It is structured with simple sentences about baseball. Accompanying each statement about baseball is a math word problem. These problems use single digit addition or subtraction. Children see firsthand how math and numbers are used every day in sports. The back of the book contains answers to the problems, along with fun facts about baseball and a glossary. The book is part of the "SandCastle" series, which has four levels—ranging from no flag up to three flags. The publisher gives the book two flags for what it calls "transitional readers." The book is primarily designed for learning reading, but it could also be used in teaching math. Parents and coaches teaching about the structure of baseball will find this a helpful resource, too.
