Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Jason loves baseball; he is a star pitcher on his team. The season is about to open when Jason suddenly starts sneezing. It is not allergies but turns out to be a common cold with aches, pains, fever, sneezing, and all the things that make one miserable. Jason's mother tells him that he is too sick to be a part of opening day and that is discouraging. Jason even goes to the doctor but learns that rest and cough medicine seem to be the order of the day. The really nice part of the story is the phone calls from his friends who give him an inning by inning description of the game, which happily they win. The illustrations show contemporary kids on the team—boys, girls, and mixed ethnic groups which are never mentioned in the text, so the subtle message is really handled well by the illustrator. The book is designed to be read with a parent. The text on the left-hand page is more complex than that on the right-hand page. It is a great way to share a story. Eventually kids will be able to read the entire book themselves.
