Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Victoria Crenson
Chico Romez is a talented leftfielder who knows that everyone makes mistakes. The trouble is String Becker, the best hitter on the team, shouts at Chico and points out every mistake he makes. Why is String out to get him? Christopher, who has written many sports novels, has packed this story with plenty of game action. "Crack! A long drive to left field. Chico started back, then turned and watched the white pill come down from the sky. Suddenly it was lost in the blinding sun!" Little Leaguers will identify with the agony and the ecstasy of this baseball dream team. 1995 (original
Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
Having recently moved to the United States from Puerto Rico, eight-year-old Chico Romez tries to fit in by playing baseball. The trouble is that back home, he excelled at diving and baseball does not come easy for him. In fact, it seems he is always doing the wrong thing, such as not touching first base, striking out, or missing a fly ball. Buddy Temple becomes his friend, but the other Royals players, especially first baseman String Becker, seem to blame him for any losses. The reader cheers and groans while reading the play-by-play accounts of Chico's games. Through determination, Chico improves his baseball skills, but his diving skill finally gains him the acceptance he craves as a near tragedy is avoided. First published in 1963, this short novel will appeal to a new generation of young sports fans who will rush to read other volumes in "The New Matt Christopher Sports Library." Excitement!!!

This book was the greatest! If you like baseball, then you'll like this book. It tells you about how kids feel when they are made fun of. It has to do with baseball and social lives of young teen-agers. Chico, the main character in the book, likes to go swimming and go diving other than playing baseball. Once you have read the first sentence, you won't beable to stop reading it. I finished this book in two days because I couldn't stop reading. I bet if you read the first sentence, you will finish this book in one night. Matt Christopher tells you all of the problems Chico faces. He had to deal with all of these problems when he was a child. Now he wants to fill you in on how kids now a days have problems just like Chico. If you want exitement, laughter, and just a good book to read, just buy this book now for a low price.
