Children's Literature
This alphabet book covers the sport of baseball from "Ace" to strike "Zone." The illustrations are colorful caricatures of baseball players and spectators which kids and adults will find funny and entertaining. The illustrator's attention to detail is evident on every page from the facial expressions to the background sites. Full-page illustration highlights include B for Ballpark, H for Home Run, J for Jersey, P for Pitcher and U for Umpire. The author steers away from obscure baseball terms and omits the obvious ones such as bat, ball, or mitt. As with most alphabet books, the entries are random and do not provide a smooth flow for understanding. The author's descriptions, however, are clear and concise. Youngsters without any knowledge of baseball may not understand some entries and might be confused by certain unexplained terms such as "stealing bases," "double play," and "base runner." Regardless, the amusing illustrations will go a long way in maintaining the reader's interest. Reviewer: Jody Little

Gr 1–3—This alphabet book matches each letter to a simple baseball factoid, as in: "Error. If a fielder misses the ball, he can be charged with an error." Q is for "Quick Release," X is for "Extra Innings," and so on. The baseball terms are predictable: "ballpark," "dugout," and so on. The main interest lies in Pamintuan's comically exaggerated figures. Rubbery faced fielders grimace as they stretch to make a catch while hugely muscled pitchers smirk down at terrified batters. This lighter-than-air confection may appeal to fans, but among the many excellent baseball books, it fails to distinguish itself.—Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

Vibrant scenes of ballpark action are the main draw in this alphabetical guide to the game of baseball. Spradlin's clear definitions of the various terms inform rather than excite (“The dugout is the bench area where the players sit while waiting for their turn at bat”). Pamintuan, however, playfully amplifies the vigor of the stadium. A pitcher's stance echoes the twistiness of the curveball he's about to launch, a colorful cast of mascots make goofy faces, and a closeup action scene shows a shortstop in midair trying to tag a runner sliding for the base. As an intro to baseball basics, it's at least a base hit. Ages 4-8. (Apr.)

Pamintuan's caricature-style portraits of exaggeratedly sinuous, muscular players in action are a hoot, but this baseball abecedarium is sabotaged by a bush-league text. Not only does Spradlin display clumsy prose-closing his comment on T for "Tag" with the claim that a fielder "must step on the base with the ball in his glove before the runner does"-he doesn't even get his baseball facts straight: No, a knuckleball isn't gripped with the knuckles (the accompanying pictures shows the correct grip), nor does the pitch have "a crazy spin when thrown" (its distinctive action is achieved by giving the ball no spin at all). There are plenty of better-written and at least somewhat more systematic baseball alphabets to get young readers primed for Opening Day-H Is for Home Run, by Brad Herzog and illustrated by Melanie Rose (2004), and B Is for Baseball, by Lisa McGuinness (2009), for example. This one's an easy out. (Informational picture book. 6-8)
