Overview

Few cities can boast as rich a baseball history as Baltimore. With longtime entries in the majors, minors, and Negro Leagues, the city's core of faithful fans have seldom lacked a team to root for. They revel in the feats of their stars (Keeler, Ruth, Palmer, Ripken) and just as ardently support the endless line of everyday players who often determine the teams' fates. Minor leaguers such as Merwin Jacobson, Howie Moss, and Jack Ogden had little impact in the major leagues but will be remembered forever for what...

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Orioles didn't land in Baltimore until 1954, but the city's baseball history stretches much further back in time. This vibrant addition to Arcadia's Images of Sports series illuminates that history with unforgettable glimpses into the glory days of the 19th-century National League Orioles, a combine that won three consecutive pennants and produced several Hall of Famers. It also celebrates Babe Ruth's Baltimore roots and the prominent role of the city in the glory years of the Negro Leagues.

    150 Years and Counting

Who would think that Baltimore had 150+ years of baseball history? Excellent overall although the Orioles don't have a lot to talk about these days.

    Great stuff

Baltimore's baseball history well predates the modern O's. This book takes a long look back into their deep history. Flynn's capable narrative guides the journey.
