Editorial Reviews

Zom Zoms
Entries on 81 baseball films released through December 1991 are arranged here by title. Each contains a full cast list, production credits, production company, year of release, and a black-and-white still from the film. Readable essays of several pages give a synopsis and critique of the films with background and behind-the-scenes information. For instance, Erickson characterizes the conclusion of "Bull Durham" thus: "Crash Davis and Annie Savoy have come to realize that they're exactly the same, two seasoned players nearing the end of their rather ethereal careers, both in need of something that will last." Erickson owes much of his research to two prior sources: an April 1968 edition of "Films in Review" and the exhaustive baseball-film dictionary "Everything Baseball", by James Mote (Prentice-Hall, 1989), which lists baseball films with brief credits and story line. "Baseball in the Movies"' complete survey of the literature is attested to by Erickson's bibliography of 120 plus items. His research included the American Film Institute and the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theatre Research collections. This volume also contains "Baseball Short Subjects," a review essay covering the most important short films, and "Baseball in Non-Baseball Films," which discusses other films in which the sport is depicted in some way. The index largely consists of film titles and personal names from the cast lists. There is no doubt that Erickson has written the definitive reference work on this film genre. A list of his picks of the best films and their availability in video format would have been helpful for the browser. Recommended for libraries with strong film collections.
