Excellent - but part of the humor comes from the translations

Bravo to Prof. Shields. I loved it right from the intro! However, having read 'Attack the Pinnacle!' (the only unedited Ichiro interview book in Japanese, published April 2001), you get a sense that Ichiro uses the translator as a 'shield' of sorts. A lot of the quotes in this book have been a result of mistranslations by the interpreter, whether deliberate or not. I think that is actually a really smart game plan for Ichiro, allowing him to concentrate on being a true 'student' of the game. (There is one quote where Ichiro tells the interpreter to re-interpret what he just said). I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the one during spring camp, involving Edgar and baggy pants... (I hear even Kazu Sasaki is taking Spanish lessons from his bullpen-mate, Jose Paniagua.) Oh, and the intro says it all - the readers should make their own interpretations of what Ichiro is all about... No matter what people say about these quotes, one thing is clear, Ichiro is here to play ball. And he is very good at that - just look where the M's are right now (after 138 games in 2001). Prof. Shields: I hope your daughter will soon get tired of the Cartoon Network. I sure did after I got cable. Perhaps you could interest your daughter in the History Channel? Maybe not...

Excellent book. Ichiro is one of the best players in baseball but I never understood him... until now! It is interesting and intriguing. Definitely a must-buy book for anyone who is curious about the famous Japanese baseball star. Also- Ichiro, you are the coolest. If you read this send me an email, please. I am your biggest fan.
