Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
Gr 5-7-These well-organized books offer historical background, the fundamentals of the games, the rules, and a chapter about players who have had an impact on the sports. Baseball has an interesting section on interpreting statistics, while Ice Hockey examines the two perceived styles of the game, speed and precision versus a rougher approach, including physical intimidation. Time lines and lists of organizations are included, along with an abundance of excellent, captioned photos, mainly in color. Buy where demand warrants.-L. R. Little, Penticton Public Library, British Columbia, Canada Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-Kennedy describes how leagues were formed, adding details such as equipment that consisted of square bats and much softer balls. He clearly explains the game's basic rules and compares the number of innings in professional play to those in Little League. Separate chapters point out differences between offense and defense. There is an attractive mix of both color and vintage, black-and-white photographs; the type font and size are optimal for new readers, as are the one-page glossary and index. However, books and Web sites listed for further reading are for much older readers or for adults. It's time to weed Ray Broekel's Baseball (Children's, 1995) and bring in this new book.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA
