Overview

Barbara Manning had been dropping some pretty broad hints that she was a baseball fan years before the S.F. Seals released this EP-length tribute to the boys of summer. Her solo compilation, A Perfect Green Blanket, took its name from a phrase for a baseball diamond, and this short-lived band's moniker, the San Francisco Seals -- shortened here to the S.F. Seals -- came from the minor league team that once counted Joe DiMaggio among its ranks. The Yankee slugger is represented on the EP by "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio," a jazzy New Orleans-style romp originally recorded by Les Brown & His Orchestra with Betty Bonney (Doris Day sang the number with the same group). Lincoln Allen takes the vocals on "The Ballad of Denny McLain," originally recorded by Mad V. Dog & the Merchants of the New Bizarre, the sad tale of the Detroit pitcher who won 30 games in one season (1968) only to end up in jail for racketeering in the '80s. The final -- and best -- song, "Dock Ellis," is an appropriately psychedelic-sounding original about the Pittsburgh pitcher who threw a no-hitter in 1970 while tripping on acid. The CD insert includes photographs of all three players. The cover image is of the San Francisco Seals ball team, circa 1938, and the back cover features a shot of their stadium.
