The 20 selected papers highlight the current status of geological and geophysical investigations in regions of the world dominated by basement geological structures. Several deal with the tectonics of terranes, including their transport, accretionary history, and recognition. Others report new petrologic, structural geochemical, and geochronic data from four continents in their interpretations of processes associated with basement tectonics. A sampling of topics turns up structural associations of the basement and sedimentary cover of the Georgian part of the Caucasus, crust-forming processes in the Southern Appalachian Orogen, Damodar Graben as a center of contrasting magmatism in the Eastern India Shield Margin, and evidence for the Baltic Shield in the geodynamics of the early Precambrian.
