The most up-to-date, comprehensive, and authoritative pharmacology text in health medicine

Enhanced by more than three hundred illustrations -- many in full color

Organized to reflect the syllabi in many pharmacology courses and in integrated curricula, Basic & Clinical Pharmacology, 12e covers the important concepts students need to know about the science of pharmacology and its application to clinical practice. Selection of the subject matter and order of its presentation are based on the authors’ many years experience in teaching this material to thousands of medical, pharmacy, dental, podiatry, nursing, and other health science students.

To be as clinically relevant as possible, the book includes sections that specifically address the clinical choice and use of drugs in patients and the monitoring of their effects, and case studies that introduce clinical problems in many chapters. Presented in full color and enhanced by more than three hundred illustrations, Basic & Clinical Pharmacology features numerous summary tables and diagrams that encapsulate important information.

Coverage that spans every aspect of medical pharmacology:

  • Basic principles
  • Autonomic drugs
  • Cardiovascular-renal drugs
  • Drugs with important actions on smooth muscles
  • Central nervous system drugs
  • Drugs used to treat anemias, clotting disorders, hyperlipidemia, and inflammation and gout
  • Endocrine drugs
  • Chemotherapeutic and immunologic drugs
  • Toxicology
  • Special subjects (perinatal, geriatric, and dermatologic pharmacology)
  • Botanical and "food supplements," and over-the-counter medications
  • Prescribing

Also in this edition:

  • Drug Summary Tables conclude most chapters, providing a concise summary of the most important drugs

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: The 12th edition of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology improves upon the new format introduced in the 11th edition and maintains its presence as the most comprehensive, authoritative, and readable textbook for students who have to master an understanding of drugs for clinical practice.
Purpose: It is designed to meet the needs of students who have to learn pharmacology either in a traditional pharmacology course or an integrated curriculum. This book is now going on its 30th year of use, with each edition improving to retain its status as the most popular pharmacology textbook. The authors have done an admirable job of incorporating the most important and relevant information on drugs while taking advantage of technology advances in textbook publishing.
Audience: This is appropriate for any student population that has to master the understanding of drugs for the delivery of healthcare to patients including: medical, pharmacy, nursing, dental, podiatry, and health science students.
Features: This book follows the organization of most traditional pharmacology textbooks with an added feature of introducing each chapter with a relevant case scenario covering a clinical situation that relies on the use of a medication discussed in the chapter and ending the chapter with a concise explanation of the case. Key features of the book include: more than 300 full-color illustrations; emphasis on drug groups and prototypes; expanded coverage of general concepts relating to newly discovered receptors, receptor mechanisms, and drug transporters; outstanding summary tables; and a list of available commercial preparations at the end of each chapter. Descriptions of important new drugs released through August 2011 are included in this edition. An electronic version of this book is available via Access Pharmacy and Access Medicine from McGraw-Hill. Important related and complementary educational resources include Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology: Examination and Board Review, 9th edition, Trevor et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2010) and USMLE Road Map: Pharmacology, 2nd edition, Katzung and Trevor (McGraw-Hill, 2006). This book will be translated into many languages.
Assessment: There are many excellent pharmacology textbooks and study aids to help students master pharmacology in their training and be proficient in the understanding of drugs for success on module and certification examinations as well as in the use of medications in the delivery of healthcare. However, none meet these needs better than this 12th edition. The authors have used their many years of educational experience to constantly improve this popular pharmacology textbook, which has been used by thousands of students for the past 30 years. This is the book that I always recommend to the students I teach pharmacology.
