Students in counseling or therapy training programs will find Basic Counseling Techniques an essential part of their studies. This textbook beings by providing practical suggestions for setting up the therapy room, using audio-visual recording equipment, and conducting those first critical interviews. Nine chapters provide the basic steps to actually applying nine different sets of clinical tools, and guidelines for selecting the appropriate tool for the appropriate clinical situation. This second edition also includes an entire chapter on the clinical thinking process, which can help beginning therapists sort through the myriad of options and select the "right" therapy for a particular client. That makes this textbook unique in the field. Each of the chapters concludes with a "Living Into the Lesson" section to give the reader experiential exercises to apply that chapter's skills.

Being a new counselor, I find myself using the internet as a help tool. During one search I found this book and have found it quite helpful in getting my bearings and developing as a Therapist. I am always coming back to the online version when I am stumped. Therefore, I am purchasing it and will recommend it to my family and friends who are in the field. Was this review helpful? This book fills an important niche--that odd space between theory and what you actually do with it. Full of practical advice for beginning counselors and therapists, the book is written with a warmth and humor of someone who's been in the business a long time. There is an honesty to this book that I find refreshing, and it does not read like a textbook although it is full of useful information. Admittedly, I had this book for a class run by Dr. Perry. In other experiences, this has been an awkward situation and an exercise in egotism, but not in this case. I enjoyed both the class and the book, and unlike the class discussions, which fade from memory, I always have this excellent book to refer to. A+! I hope they'll upload it for the Nook soon! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
