Meet the Author

Roberto Sabas is a freelance illustrator whose work has appeared in various publications. He lives in Savoy, Illinois.

Wayne Dickert is a professional kayaker and canoeist who competed in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He is currently the manager of instruction for the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, North Carolina.

Photographer Skip Brown shoots outdoor sports and recreational activities for books and magazines. He is a Class V paddler, an advanced-rated hang glider pilot, and an accomplished windsurfer, snowboarder, and mountain biker. He lives on the Potomac River in Maryland with his wife and son.

    Great beginning whitewater kayak book!

    This book gives in depth insight into paddling moves, basic river reading information, and breaks down the roll into simple steps. The use of repetitive terminology in each of it's stroke breakdowns allows the user to fully understand each description. This book even discusses the two most popular whitewater boat hulls and how each effects the paddler's movements. This book is especially helpful after trying out the river a couple of times. It's details (especially in subtle body adjustments) allow you to analyze your own progress and the specifics even lend themselves to self-diagnosis of roll and paddling problems. In river reading techniques, it utilizes detailed photographs of the river from both "eye level" from a boat view and views from a scout position. It includes discussions on gear and safety issues in detail as well. I found this book tremendously helpful and more detailed than others I had read.
