Overview

This book is an introduction to the basics of surface science. The Nobel Prize winner Wolfgang Pauli's statement, 'God made solids, but surfaces were the work of the devil!' emphasizes the diabolic nature of surfaces. Surfaces are the external border of materials to the external worlds, thus by exploring surfaces one can investigate the material. In the last few decades new and exciting surface properties have been explored in nanomaterials, low-dimensional structures in electronic and photonic devices and other numerous applications.

About the Author

Dr Lyudmila V Goncharova received her MSc degree from Lomonosov Moscow State University and her PhD degree in Chemistry from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, specializing in surface physics and thermal energy atomic scattering. She joined the University of Western Ontario as an Assistant Professor of Physics in 2007, and became an Associate Professor in 2014. Her work has been continually funded through NSERC Discovery Grants. Since 2012, Dr Goncharova has been a director of the Western Tandetron Accelerator Facility.
