Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Carole A. Kenner, PhD, RN, FAAN (Council of International Neonatal Nurses)
Description: The book presents the key concepts of the U.S. healthcare system using a reader-friendly, student-oriented format to reinforce learning and student objectives, completion exercises, and some interactive activities. The online component also provides information on healthcare reform.
Purpose: The purpose is to heighten students' awareness of factors that impact the U.S. healthcare system.
Audience: Undergraduate students in the health professions or health policy are the intended audience.
Features: This book provides a historical overview of the U.S. healthcare system before moving into specific aspects and influences on the system. It includes discussions about who the key stakeholders are; settings such as public health, mental health, inpatient and outpatient; and the influence on care in relation to regulations and changes over time. Each chapter starts with learning objectives and a "Did you know?" section that addresses key facts that will pique the student's interest. At the end, there is a student note section (just blank pages) for personal notes, followed by activities that test the student's knowledge acquisition. The references are generally good, but most are from before 2009.
Assessment: There are many books like this on the market, but most are aimed at graduate students or practicing health professionals. This book is unique in its basic approach that is appropriate for undergraduate students.
