Meet the Author

Stephie Smith was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the fifth of six girls. Early years were spent making mischief and, in general, driving her parents crazy while the family migrated between Ohio, West Virginia, and Florida. In fact, her family moved so often--18 times before Stephie finished sixth grade--that some people suspected they were running from the law. Stephie left home at 14, finished high school at 16, and enlisted in the Air Force at 18, graduating with honors from the USAF Schools of Electronics and Instrumentation. After attending several colleges and universities around the country (switching majors from Chemistry to Art to English to Psychology but never figuring out what she wanted to be when she grew up), she followed her sisters to east central Florida and settled there. She remains there today writing historical romance, humorous women's fiction, and computer how-to books. You can contact her through her website StephieSmith.com. She loves to hear from readers.

Finally, a book that tells the important things without trying to cover every single thing Windows can do. I've used Windows for years but was still fumbling around and there are a lot of things in this book I didn't know. I didn't know that if I hold my Ctrl key down and move my mouse thumbwheel or press the up and down arrows on my keyboard, I can increase or decrease the size of whatever I'm looking at. I didn't know how to customize my folder views. And there were several topics in the Q&A section that I've had trouble with. I really liked the fact that in just 2 or 3 hours I was able to improve my skills to the point that I know what I'm doing on any computer. I hope the author publishes this kind of book for other softwares.

    Excellent book covering the basics

This book is perfect for anyone who didn't learn the basics of their Windows PC and it tells how to customize things like your desktop and start menu too. I liked the Q&A section because it presents problems that people have (desktop icons disappearing, not being able to close a window, etc.) There are a lot of screen pictures and because it's not based on a single version of Windows, it helps you to be able to figure out what to do on different computers. Now I'm ready for volume 2.

    Perfect for Learning the Basics

Basics of Windows should be shipped with every PC with Windows. Stephie Smith has made learning Windows so simple even a caveman could do it! Her basic approach obviously comes from her real-life instruction to non-PC users on how to maneuver through Windows. The large, color screenshots and clear instructions show exactly where you are and what to do for Windows XP, Vista, and 7. It’s perfect for those new to the PC-scene or those who never learned the basics.
