Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tima Murrell
Basketball is fun for all ages. This "Rookie Read About Sports" book starts with simple language to describe the game of basketball. All of the terms used in the game are described with both words and pictures. It ends with several pages of information that include tips for good sportsmanship, health recommendations, and fun facts about basketball, such as when the first orange basketballs were used. Most of the illustrations are pictures of children playing basketball. This works well to get children enthusiastic about playing the game. The words are basic enough for an early reader to be able to decipher. If children are reading the book to themselves, it is probably enough to keep them entertained. But the information could be too basic and brief to keep a child, who has any previous knowledge of the game, engaged. Reviewer: Tima Murrell

K-Gr 2—Designed to appeal to the youngest readers, this series introduces popular team sports. The short chapters give brief overviews followed by key elements of the games. Each spread consists of a full-color photograph of multiethnic children engaged in the sport and a few sentences. The back matter includes tips on good sportsmanship and staying healthy, along with fun facts. "Words You Know" sections match essential words with a corresponding picture. The flow can be choppy and there are some flaws: the "Getting a Run" section in Tee Ball switches gender midstream ("The batter is safe if she gets there first. She stays on first base. He goes to the next base if his team gets another hit."). While these are adequate introductions, "Jump into Sports" (The Child's World, 2010) is a better beginning-reader series.
