Children's Literature - Elizabeth Sulock
Through thirteen themes Woods offers a general overview of the sport of basketball. The book opens by defining basketball, describing how the game was invented, and the basic rules. The National Basketball Association and Women's National Basketball Association are discussed, along with basketball around the world and the most famous player in history, Michael Jordan. Other examples of themes include: team rivalry, the Harlem Globetrotters, and teammates Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki as examples of great teamwork. Many basketball superstars and their record breaking accomplishments are discussed such as Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Yao Ming, Dwight Howard, and Kevin Garnett, along with WNBA players Candace Parker and Lisa Leslie. The text includes a glossary defining basketball terminology, a list of basketball websites, and an index. As a whole, the book has more pictures than text, making it a slam dunk for reluctant readers and sports enthusiasts. Part of the "Crabtree Contact" series. Reviewer: Elizabeth Sulock
