Only for the die hard fan or desperate reader

I have read Ms Lackey's stories/books since her first published short story. However as her writing got sloppy and lazy I quit reading them. I once again start reading her & buying her books after reading Foundations. She was back to high quality writing and story line. However this book was a total disaster. Two thirds of the book was simply fill in and padding. Page after page of descriptions of inns, meals, and landscape of journeys. Then she added pages of flashback description from earlier books in this series. OMG. After Mags and crew finally get to Bastion the whole story gets bizarre. A cousin appears, Mags get really weird and believability totally disappears from the book. Wish I could get my money back. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. A sad and sorry ending to the series.

The common saying is that some things improve with age. Unfortunately, this latest book of Ms. Lackey's is not one of them. I was somewhat disappointed with the quality of "Steadfast", but I was hopeful about "Bastion"...and then when I finally read it, I actually skipped whole chapters out of the sheer unrealistic, almost illogical pattern of thought processing. I love Ms. Lackey's Valdemar series; all of her older works have gripped me from page to page. But almost all of her recent works have become examples of poor plot, poor editing, minimal character development, and poor quality.

Ms. Lackey, go back to being the amazing writer you can be, instead of quickly turning out book in an attempt to satisfy the market!!!!

Much better than the last book in this series. At least some closure for the main character, Mags. And thank the heavens
none of that stupid Kirball stuff! THAT bored me to death. If I want Polo/soccer matches I'll watch them on TV.
Ms. Lackey could probably come up with one more book in the series, maybe lead into the next set of valdemar characters, bu
this is touted as the last in the series, so guess we'll all have wait and see.

Good read would like at least one more

I enjoyed this installment in the Valdemar series. Now knowing where Mags came from he can get on with his life. It would be nice to see one more book in this group to really provide an ending. However, we may find out more if she starts another set in this universe. You never heard much about Talia and Dirk until the By the Sword and "Winds" books.

    Love the plot

I love the Mags and gang. I just wish she had developed this story more. Felt rushed and short almost in complete hope there is one more book coming to bring the story to a finished ending

    Latest entry is great!

I really liked the way Mags finally finds out about his family, but I feel like there might still be more to this tale. Is there another one expected?

    Great read!

A wonderful continuation of Mag's story. You even get to meet a decent relative of his. It lagged in some places, but a great read overall for those who love the Valdemar series. If you have not read any of the Foundation series books, I don't think that you should start with this one as it would be too confusing.

I usually love Lackey's stories but while her descriptions are wonderful, it takes almost 1/2 the book before we get going. There's minimal feel of danger here. I thought that there would be more angst from Mags about returning to a place he'd been so badly treated. More of overcoming of memories of his time in the mine but that's barely touched upon here except as...oh this was bad, but I'm over it. I think there's more feeling and descriptions given to what everyone eats and how the caves are setup than to real emotion and difficulties from where he is. I did like learning more about the people he came from but again the danger from that is shortlived and you don't feel a lot of suspense. More is from how will he convince his 'blood' relative that he will never go back.

    Bastion

although i enjoyed the book, it was a bit disappointing, felt more like the end of a chapter than the end of the book. i hope there is one more to sort of tie up loose ends. i want to know what happens to Mags and Amily when they get home!

Don't bother if you haven't already read the earlier books in the series. The author is skilled enough to make it entertaining, but it is not nearly up to her best.
I'm glad I found it at the library instead of buying it.

    Need more

I was eagerly waiting for this book to come out. The romance between Mags and Amily finally expands. Mags finally learns the reason for being hunted.

I really hope there is a sixth book because it does not feel finished to me.

I have not read a book by Ms Lackey that I have not liked. The trend continues.

    Finished, but not exactly satisfying

I agree with other readers that this book was short and sort of wandered about. I think Lackey was trying to show that Mags and Amily were grown up and ready to be resposible for themselves, since the whole point is to make Mags disappear so his clan stops looking for him. She also was wrapping up all the other pivotal characters from Mags life. This book definately felt like the end to this sub series, but it was short at under 300 pgs and definately felt like she was ready to be done with it.
