Description: This is one of many books on the market teaching students the basics of the physical examination. It is being published in its 13th edition, with the previous edition published in 2017.
Purpose: Bates' Guide goes back to 1974 with its first edition and has been updated periodically as the science of the physical examination has developed and the details of eliciting the important aspects of patients' symptoms within their cultural constraints have become understood. The authors have continued the tradition of accepting the challenge of integrating the cultural aspects extremely well.
Audience: This is primarily a book for medical students; however, as the medical profession has come to realize the importance of the cultural background of communicating with patients, the book has many updates and tremendous teaching value for all levels of clinicians.
Features: The book is divided into three units: The Foundations of Health Assessment, Regional Examinations, and Special Populations. Each unit has chapters covering the basics such as Approach to the Clinical Encounter; Interviewing, Communication, and Interpersonal Skills; Cognition, Behavior, and Mental Status; Children: Infancy Through Adolescence; Pregnant Woman; and Older Adults. The chapters on health maintenance and screening and evaluating clinical evidence are a tremendous asset, giving students a well-reasoned understanding of the importance and utility of these concepts. The chapters on the regional examination include a review of the basic anatomy and physiology, many extremely illustrative figures, many boxes with key points to remember, selective points of history for the particular organ system, practical and essential points of the examination with special techniques for special circumstances such as the bed-bound patient, and how to accurately document the findings of the examination. The photographs are extremely well produced, highlighting the important aspects of skin lesions and retinal photographs. There are extensive references that are current and comprehensive. The purchase of the book includes an electronic version with student resources including an interactive question bank, audio heart and breath sounds, and skill performance evaluations. Unfortunately, I was not able to access these functions (after clicking on the links I was shown only a blank screen). There is also a separate website that includes 18 volumes of objective structure clinical examination (OSCE) videos depicting the typical physical examination, which are extremely well presented.
Assessment: This edition continues the tradition of Bates' Guides teaching all how to obtain a detailed history of patient complaints and perform a physical examination to develop a meaningful differential diagnosis.
