Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This is an update of a trusted book on the physical examination last published in 2007.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students with a memory aid in developing their skills in interviewing patients, obtaining a history, and performing a physical examination. These skills are the basis for the student's future success in medicine no matter which specialty they choose, and the authors have continued the long-term excellence that the many editions of Bates' have enjoyed.
Audience: The intended audience includes medical students of all years and residents in all specialties, as well as nursing and physician assistant students. The authors are leading educators in their fields.
Features: Both this book and the pocket version use a similar presentation, capturing the details in a most efficient manner in a format that is easy to refer to. It is a perfect mix of bulleted text and outstanding pictures and tables. My only disappointment was being unable to access the online version; the website address to access it does not bring one to a page where the access code can be entered. Going back to the main page, where I could enter the access code, I received a number of error messages.
Assessment: This is a great book for students learning the art of medical diagnostics, but the publisher support for the web-based version is not adequate.

    Good book, fairly well organized

Overall a pretty good book on physical exams and Hx taking. As for the previous comment left by an apparent 1st year med student about examination of the nose with an otoscope being 'wrong', one must remember that in medicine there are many ways to do the same thing. Nasal examination w/ an otoscope not only works (and is used commonly in the field) but also avoids spending money unnecessarily on extra equipment that performs a similar function. This book does mention other ways exams can be performed, but concentrates on one basic method to help teach students.

Do not get eTextbook. It does not come with the code to access the online materials even though it costs more than the physical book.

Errors in book, Textbook of Physical Diagnosis by Swartz a superb book

There are errors in this book. On the techniques for examination of the Nose and Sinuses this book shows and tells you to use an otoscope with an ear speculum to examine the nose. This is wrong. The correct way to examine the Nose is with a bivalve nasal speculum and a penlight or headlight. Also an ear speculum should only be used to examine the external auditory canal. When this book was written by Barbara Bates, M.D. this information was in the book. This was a good book when Dr. Bates was the author.Dr. Bickley should not have taken this information out of the book and inserted wrong information. Textbook of Physical Diagnosis by Dr. Swartz is my recommendation for Physical Diagnosis courses not Bickley's book.
