Children's Literature - Sarah Maury Swan
Beau is an adorable, blond boy, around the age of two. Theo is a happy part-Boxer, part-Shepherd, part-Labrador, part-Sharpei puppy and they are best friends. In this story, Beau and Theo get quite dirty playing in the sand by the ocean. They must take a bath. And what could be nicer than taking a bath with your best friend? Theo gets in first, with a hefty push from Beau. Pretty soon, boy and puppy are wet and sudsy with Theo trying to keep soap bubbles out of his eyes. Plenty of toys float in the water and the boys want to know if it’s time to play. But no, more scrubbing is needed—lots more. Watch out when Theo shakes the water off. Soap free, boy and dog climb out of the tub. Several towels later, both are mostly dry. The final photograph is of Beau and Theo cuddling in the tub. Any child seeing this book will want to take a bath with a dog. The photos are beautiful and full of energy. PreS—The follow-up to Naptime with Theo and Beau (Feiwel & Friends, 2015), this title puts the adorable puppy Theo and toddler Beau in the bath. The story, such that it is, begins with the inseparable pair getting good and dirty at the beach. Then it's "time to get clean." This entails some water, bubbles, toys, soap, and a scrub. Full-color photographs are engaging throughout. The spreads could tell the story without words, and the multicolored typeface adds whimsy and humor. A brief word from the author gives the backstory of how the family came to rescue Theo from a shelter. VERDICT An eminently adoptable option and fun addition to most picture book collections.—Emily E. Lazio, The Smithtown Special Library District, NY
