Children's Literature
The original Batman was created by Bob Kane and there have been many spinoffs based on his original character. For this reviewer, this particular story did not have a clear message. The characters are introduced on the opening pages and Poison Ivy, who is listed as a passionate protector of the earth, is cast as the villain since her tactics are harmful to fellow humans. The story opens with a newscast announcing that a lovely green space in Gotham City is going to be turned into a shopping mall. This startles Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) and also Poison Ivy. She takes immediate action, turning people into trees and the park into a jungle. Batman is able to penetrate and finally bring Poison Ivy to justice. Then he finds an antidote to restore all the people. Once again as Bruce Wayne, he uses his resources to purchase the land and donate the park to the city. While Poison Ivy uses tactics that are not acceptable, her mission seems to be the right one and it just so happens that Bruce Wayne is rich enough to take the action that he did. Ordinary citizens do not seem to be involved and no mention is made as to whether or not there was a vote to convert the park. Not really a book to recommend. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
