Much Better Than Expected, Given Other Reviews

I just finished this book and can't understand the negative reviews it has gotten. I thought it was great. I read the trade edition, which may have had more cohesion than the individual books, and I didn't bring any preconceived expectations when I started it. I know a lot of people anxiously awaited this and were disappointed when it finally arrived. I'll admit, it's not The Dark Knight Returns but then that work redefined Batman and changed the genre forever. This is just a terrific story, which for me is good enough.

    Review

Frank Miller presents an absolutely memorable origin story for Batman--the best of any origin story for this character.

    Review

The Dark Knight Strikes Again is a mostly forgettable sequel to The Dark Knight Returns. Where the first established itself as re-imagining of Batman the second is just one of Frank Miller's lame attempts at verbally attacking American society.

    I Also Recommend:

    Dissapointing

I picked up this book soon after reading The Dark Knight Returns and was left severly dissapointed. The plot was pretty good, but I cant tell what's going on with the disgusting art. Plus the stupid news reports from those punk kids talking about the superchix was really annoying. But what was interesting is the Dick Grayson thing because in All Star Batman & Robin The Boy Wonder he is verbally abused constantly by Batman so it was nice to the effects it had on him. I'm sorry Frank, this I wont forgive you for.

    I Also Recommend:

Better the second time for me

The first time I read Batman Year One, I thought that it was the most overrated p.o.s. I've read. But after I read it again I thought that it was actually really good. It is about batman's first year after coming home from years of training to avenge his parent's death. Don't expect to see the Joker, Scarecrow or any other Batman's villains because in this he's taking on the mob and police corruption with a surprise visit from assistant district attorney Harvey Dent. This maybe the most important Batman book to read.

    Miller & Mazzucchelli = Greatness.

    The pinnacle.

A back to basics approach re-telling the tale of Batman's origins.

No other work draws you into the world of Gotham City and it's malcontents quite like this one. This Gotham actually feels like a real place.

The story does a superb job of chronicling the daily grind of a vigilante's existence.

    And it is a grind.

Enough cannot be said of Mazzucchelli's artwork. His rudimentary approach is perfect for Batman. It's timeless. No one has ever done a better job of capturing the noirish quality of Batman's crime-ridden world. You can almost feel the grit and grime.

No other installment of Batman holds up over the years quite like this one does.

Good but not as good as advertised!!

Most Bat-fans will tell you Miller's Year One is one of if not the best Batman story ever told. I finally got to read it and have to say that while its good, its not anywhere the best. Batman/Bruce Wayne actually plays second fiddle to Jim Gordon who gets treated the best. Gordon comes off as how I have always pictured him in my head. Mazzuchelli's art is very good and much apppreciated over Miller's. Good but not great stuff!

Very good. Same story, different take.

As much Gordon's story as it is Bruce Waynes. This tells the story behind the story. The thinking...and mistakes...that lead to the man behind the mask. And the lonely honest cop trying to make a difference by himself.

The only written version of The Dark Knight's Origin worth reading...

Like many other comic characters, Batman's origin has been retold many times. This is the single attempt that actually IS worth it.

    Fantastic Batman Story

This is the first Batman graphic novel I ever read. When I took the book to the cash register, I wondered if I would look a little silly buying a comic book. The cashier said upon looking at my purchase 'Oh, my husband's reading this. He said this is the best graphic novel he's ever read.' Talk about an endorsement! And it's no surprise. This is simply a fantastic book. It's amazing at how Frank Miller can make a very realistic Batman book without it becoming silly or presumptuous. Add in the parallel story with Jim Gordon and you've got a great tale. As a matter of fact, this story may be as much about Gordon as Batman. The future commissioner is depicted as a former military man who can take names as much as the next guy. Unlike some earlier or later depictions, he can actually do something. And Batman's introduction is superb. Keep in mind, this is not a kid's novel. This is a must have for any fan of the modern age Batman.

    A mans journey

The first thing people think of when batman is said, is a man in a garish neon outfit making him look like a transvestite bat. They categorize him as a needless distraction in any media, especially in comics. But this comic transcends all opinions and delivers a story that is undeniably realistic and exciting. Gone is the neon jump suit, replaced by a emotionally wounded man trying to make sense of his in an urban jungle eating itself alive. Where the only wasy to make change is to become fear itself and make all that inflict evil on innocents pay. This book in a nutshell makes the Untouchables look like barney miller.

THE FIRST YEAR OF THE BATMAN

Frank Miller is a big reason that BATMAN means so much to me. This story is the chronicle of the Bat's first year. GET THIS IF YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A BAT-FAN.

    A Must-Read for Batman fans

This book is definitely a triumph. Like a shining light in the darkness of crime ruled Gotham, Bruce Wayne, recently returned from training around the world, is honing in on his crime fighting skills. At the same time, Lieutenant Gordon, recommisioned to Gotham with is pregnant wife, is trying to adapt to the corrupt Gotham City. Catwoman is also portrayed with her fateful first encounters with Batman during the early stages of her transformation. Unique in the fact that it also portrays the weaknesses of Batman's early attempts at crimefighting, as well as Lieutenant Gordon's temptations and failures, this graphic novel really triumphs as Batman's introduction into the world of crimefighting.

Simply the best Batman story ever!

Frank Miller's Batman Year One has proven to be one of the best, if not the best Graphic Novels of all time. This gritty, dark reteling of Batman's origin is written beautifuly!! I give Frank Miller some of my greatest respect for he know Batman is not some happy toy with a guy in tights running around with him. Miller knows Batman is dark, scary, and sometimes showing no mercy. I also enjoyed how he made Batman seem like a lucky ametuer the first few times around. Also the story of Jim Gordon, Gothams only true cop, is outstanding, adding to my praise of this book. Miller even goes far enough to retell Carwomans origin. My only complaint, Alfred is seen only once or twice, not really playing a part in this one. Still only one scratch on this amazing novel. Millers slam dunk epilouge is enough to make any Batfan jump up and down. So in other words, you'd be doing yourself a favor to read this book. It will surely make you feel so much different about the Dark Night and the city he lives in. Thank you Mr. Miller for bringing Batman back to were he belongs!

    How it begins.

Its a great Batman title... it truly personifies Batman, as well as Sgt. Gordon, all the while telling a tale that was obviously the basis of Batman Begins. Some minor differences between the two, but it still gives both even more credibility for being such great stories.

    Not really worth the Read

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is a fantastic book, but the sequel is less than satisfying. I is extremly hard to follow and jumps around for apparently no reason what so ever. If you are new to comic books or new to Batman there are much better titles to read. The only reason I would recomend this title to anyone is if they really want to see what it is about. The ending was horrific. The story line had potental, but it seems Miller did not spend as much time on it as it required. Read at you own risk.
