Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
The repeated refrain “Batman is brave” is used after each of the scenes that might seem scary to youngsters. On the last page Batman says, “so are you.” Presented in a board book format this title will stand repeated use by early readers and younger Batman fans. Beginning with the onset of nightfall, we learn that Batman is brave in the face of the darkness—a common fear shared by many youngsters. Batman zips through the night on his ropes and races through the dark on his Batcycle. “The dark can be scary, but Batman is not afraid.” Neither monsters nor villains scare Batman—but youngsters may have expressed fears of such creatures. The comic-book-like illustrations are accompanied by a bold font text and “action” words that pop off the pages. “ZOOM!, ZING!, WOOSH!,” etc. Children will be glad to have the opportunity to discuss their own fears and may find reinforcement in the idea that they can be brave—as brave as Batman. This title is licensed by DC COMICS. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan; Ages 2 to 6.
