Barnes & Noble - Roberta Penn
One of the tastiest blues CDs of 1995 wasn’t available in American record store bins, but now Evidence Music has released Larry Garner’s sweet set, BATON ROUGE, and it still has the flavor of the moment. A guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Garner is one of the best of the new generation of blues men to emerge from the South in the past decade. Although his music is evocative of older Louisiana-bred artists such as Lazy Lester and the Neville Brothers, Garner's music remains newly minted. The all original set opens with "Jook Joint Woman," the perfect picture of a chitlin’ circuit Saturday night, then moves into the uplifting but not preachy "The Road of Life." The ...

The all original set opens with "Jook Joint Woman," the perfect picture of a chitlin’ circuit Saturday night, then moves into the uplifting but not preachy "The Road of Life." The low-down "Blues Pay My Way," the reggae-tinged "High on Music," and the acoustic "Airline Blues" are personal tunes portraying the life of a 90's blues man, while the countrified "The Haves and the Have Nots" is Garner’s call for economic equality. Aiding the Baton Rouge native is a stellar band that includes guitarist Larry McCray, keyboardist David Torkanowsky, bassist Willie Weeks, and drummer Steve Potts. The sound they create together is a mature but undated one. Honest and unflashy, BATON ROUGE is a true blues recording and another sparkle in Larry Garner’s rising star.
All Music Guide - Cub Koda
This was supposed to be Garner's follow-up album to his breakthrough third album, You Need to Live a Little, released in 1994. Due to contract problems, however, it never saw an American release until 1999. Like its predecessor, Garner's brand of blues moves between Excello swamp blues and more soulful, contemporary styles with a strong songwriting sense ingrained in all of it. A solid band, including Larry McCray on guitar and Willie Weeks on bass, drives this session right along. Highlights include "Jook Joint Woman," "The Road of Life," "Airline Blues," "The Have and the Have Nots," and "Go to Baton Rouge." A lost little classic.
