Children's Literature
The "Animal Kingdom Classification" series of books gives young readers an up close and personal look at many of Earth's diverse and intriguing animals. This particular book in the series pertains to the classification of animals known as mammals. Through the very effective use of an animal classification chart, diagrams, a glossary, and related resources, the reader becomes familiar with a variety of mammals. The origins of mammals are explained and the important topic of saving mammals is covered. Colorful illustrations and photographs make the animals come to life, adding to this book's empathetic appeal. This is a quality book with reinforced library binding and is well worth its price. The bear depicted on the hardback cover is most definitely an attention getter. Most children love to read about and look at pictures of animals; this is an animal book that I would definitely recommend. 2006, David West Children's Books/Compass Point Books, Ages 8 to 12.

This fascinating, beautifully illustrated series examines each of the major classes of the world's varied animal kingdom. Each volume provides a labeled diagram of a typical specimen and looks at the evolutionary record, life cycle, and habitats. Unusual members are highlighted as well-egg-laying mammals, walking fish, and a species of lizard that reproduces without a male. Mammals covers all the basic facts, but unfortunately this class is so diverse it is difficult to cover detailed information on specific species. Primates are virtually ignored, and it is never mentioned that humans are mammals. Otherwise there is interesting information on the origin of mammals, endangered habitats, and socialization. The series is written clearly and succinctly on an upper elementary reading level.. Each book includes a glossary of biological terms and suggests further reading and Web sites for the researcher. The color photos, efficient format, and unusual facts make the books highly browsable and entertaining choices for the circulating collection. (Animal Kingdom Classification).
