Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cheryl Williams Chang
Bats are intriguing, bizarre looking, and nocturnal animals. A nocturnal animal is one that is awake during the night and asleep during the day. There are many interesting facts about bats that people may not be aware of. More than 900 varieties of bats exist almost everywhere in the world, excluding extreme-cold climates close to the North and South Poles. Bats vary in size, and the smallest known as the Kitti's Hog-nosed Bat, is the size of a bumblebee. Bats do not have good vision; therefore in order to find food, they make high-pitched noises, which bounce off objects. This is known as echolocation. Bats protect themselves by roosting in areas that are hard to reach. This could contribute to their longevity as a bat can live up to 40 years. This nonfiction book is the first of a series of six books about nocturnal animals. Crisp photographs of bats are provided on each glossy page. The font is large and the text is simple, making this a perfect fit for kindergarten or first grade. A glossary, index, reference page, and table of contents are included in each of the "Nocturnal Animals" series. A book of this type is highly recommended for an elementary science class, social studies class, and/or an elementary school library. Reviewer: Cheryl Williams Chang
