Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Kids (perhaps bedecked in the accompanying chef's hat) can dish up sweets and treats found in Batter Up Kids: Delicious Desserts by Barbara Beery, founder of an Austin, Tex., cooking school of the same name. Recipes accompany finished photos for 25 creative confections that lack nothing for presentation, including Candy-Coated Dragonflies, Baked Snowballs and Stack 'Em High Strawberry Shortcakes. Child-friendly instructions (the Baked Snowballs recipe explains that frothy egg whites should look "like soapsuds") create an inviting tone. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Beery has attempted to create a fun and whimsical cookbook for children, but her effort falls short in terms of practicality and usability. The packaging is appealing; full-page, close-up photos feature an abundance of sugary pastel colors, and the book comes with an actual child-size chef's hat. However, the recipes are uneven, ranging from crafty (coating food with chocolate and sprinkles) to complicated (a version of baked Alaska-minus the flames and alcohol). Most include pre-made foods like frozen pie crusts, cake mixes, refrigerator biscuits, or pound cake. Although the crafts look beautiful in the photographs, some children may find the visual introduction of ingredients confusing. Jane Bull's The Cooking Book (DK, 2002) is a better choice.-Genevieve Gallagher, Murray Elementary School, Charlottesville, VA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

CANDY-COATED DRAGONFLIES

Makes 8 dragonflies

1 pound vanilla candy coating or vanilla almond bark (use 8 to 10 squares)

Food coloring, optional

8 (8-inch) pretzel rods

16 large classic-shaped pretzel twists

Assorted decorating sugars or sprinkles

1. Melt candy coating according to package directions. Remove from heat and pour into 2 or 3 small bowls. You may add 2 to 4 drops of food coloring to each bowl. Stir to blend color.

2. Place pretzel rods on foil-lined cookie sheet sprayed with nonstick cooking spray (about 3 inches apart from each other). These are the dragonflies' long bodies.

3. Carefully spoon the warm melted candy coating over each pretzel rod to cover completely.

4. Now dip each pretzel twist in the candy coating and place one on each side of the upper half of the pretzel rod. The pretzel twists should actually rest on top of the pretzel rod and just barely touch one another. This forms the dragonfly's wings.

5. Sprinkle each dragonfly pretzel with colored sugars or sprinkles.

6. Place cookie sheet in freezer for 5 to 10 minutes to allow candy coating to harden on pretzels.

7. Remove from freezer and carefully take each dragonfly off cookie sheet to serve.

Don't let them fly away before you have a chance to take a bite!
