Overview

A fresh and acclaimed account of the Spanish Civil War by the bestselling author of Stalingrad and The Fall Of Berlin 1945

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War's outbreak, Antony Beevor has written a completely updated and revised account of one of the most bitter and hard-fought wars of the twentieth century. With new material gleaned from the Russian archives and numerous other sources, this brisk and accessible book (Spain's #1 bestseller for twelve weeks), provides a balanced and penetrating perspective, explaining the tensions that led to this terrible overture to World War II and affording new insights into the war-its causes, course, and consequences.

Editorial Reviews

    I Also Recommend:

This author should not pretend to write on history when he is so biased in his world outlook

I have thrown away the money that this book cost me, and I take it as a good lesson on why B&N has provided us with the ability to download a sample of a book that we may be interested in.
I am very interested in the Spanish Civil War, and I believe that it offers a great lesson for all democracies in our world as to what blind partisanship and ruthless politicians can do to a nation. Unfortunately this author has such simplistics notions of what a study of history involves that he is blind to his own biases. The book reads more like gossip and hearsay than any seriously researched book on such an immportant subject. Time and again Mr. Beevor dismisses major players, like the Catholic Church, in the Spanish culture with clear biases common to many modern secularist. This is a shame because this bias prevents Mr. Beevor from providing any credible analysis of whhat this particular faction, and others, contributed to this debacle. At the same timme Mr. Beevor is so blind to the claims of the socialist and anarchist groups that he never stops to analyze what it meant to a portion of the population that these groups would impose their worldview on.
And so, it is sad that this poor "historical" writer has wasted so much paper and ink on something as useless as this book. I doubt that I would consider any of his other masterpieces...
Compared to Barbara W. Tuchman's works, Mr Beevor should write only historical fiction.
In short; thank you B&N, next time I will make it a point to sample what I am about to read. Fortunately I bought the ebook version so that at least I was not part of killinng trees in order to read this worthless book.
