Overview

Ever since Gray, Barkley, and their friends defeated Goblin, an infamous great white, at Tuna Run, life in the Big Blue has become murkier than ever for this young shiver of sharks. Food is scarce. Enemies lurk in every shadow. And Gray still doesn't know what has become of his family - of his mother, Sandy, and the rest of his Coral Reef shiver. Everywhere they swim, currents seem to whisper of a growing threat . . . of a shark who will stop at nothing until he has seized control of the entire ocean.

Now Gray must train with Takiza Jaelynn Betta vam Delacrest Waveland ka Boom Boom, a wise and mysterious fighting fish who has promised to teach his young apprentice the ways of the ocean and the secret of what it means to be a great warrior. That is, if Gray can learn to believe in himself, find the courage to trust his heart, and grow big enough to fight back!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Did you know that sharks carry personal vendettas? That they can organize, get into battle formations, become king and ruler of the ocean and rest on top of blue whale "thrones," eating their vanquished enemy that is brought to the king on the back of a sea turtle? Or that sea urchins and certain crabs exist only as interior decorators for shark homes? How about that sharks can slap others or hug them with their tails? My, my! They do all this and more in Altbacker's second middle reader novel about Gray, a megalodon shark, and his colleges, including a dog fish sidekick named Barkley, a black-tip shark named Onyx, a great white named Striiker a sawfish named Snork, a stonefish named Trank that speaks like a 1930's New York gangster and so on. After emerging triumphant from battles and squabbles in the first book of the "Shark Wars" series, Gray has left his sheltered life and shark mom, Sandy, to make his own way in the "big blue" (ocean). He is now head of the Rogue Shiver and has to use all his wits to keep from being attacked and eaten by enemy shivers. Meanwhile, Finnivus, the evil emperor shark, and his huge shiver are bent on ruling the seas. He is well on his way after a particularly gruesome battle with other shivers. Is it up to Gray to save the big blue and all fishy citizens from the evil Finnivus? Gray reunites with his home shiver and goes into training with Takiza, a beta and famous "Yoda" of the fish world. Soon Rogue Shiver, Coral Shiver and the AuzyAuzy shiver are entwined in an epic battle for the freedom of all sharkkind. The book contains dozens of sea-dwelling characters all of whom have cute names, plus locations with confusing titles. For example, "Sparkle Blue" is fish heaven, "Big Blue" is the ocean in general and "Deep Blue" refers to the deep, dark waters of an ocean trench. (I have yet to figure out what "wet-wet" is.) Even humankind has its own name—landsharks. Readers may have to keep a chart. This series is reportedly popular with young and reluctant readers, but it carries anthropomorphism to extremes to the point that the sharks do not function like real sharks at all. Action is downright bloody. If clever sayings like, "don't look a bluefin gift in the mouth" and epic marine battles are appealing, this book is for you. But do not expect to learn anything about real sharks. Reviewer: Judy Crowder

I am 10 years old and enjoyed this book because it was exciting and fun to read. I enjoyed the differant sharks and the personalities that the author gave to them. I can't wait until the second book comes out in December to continue to read more about the shark and their adventures.
