KLIATT - Lisa Carlson
Truism or cliche: A person must have intense, often harsh life experiences in order to create exceptional works. This theme makes up the focus in Denman's Battle of the Bands—a story about Jay, the lead member of a punk-type band called the Lunar Ticks, who is searching for life experiences that will enable him to take the band beyond the mediocrity of a "garage band" and win the annual "battle of the bands" competition. At first, Jay feels confident that the Lunar Ticks will prevail, until he hears Indigo Daze, a band whose lyricist has recently experienced personal tragedy that she incorporated into intensely emotional songs. Jay learns that defeat has positive consequences and that perhaps it isn't the quantity of life lived that gives good artists the edge over mediocre ones, but how aware people are of what they are living and the meaning they make of their experiences. Orca Soundings novels strive to accommodate the reluctant or low-level reader: plots tend to be straightforward and easy to follow without more than three major characters. The premise of this story, a garage band competition, serves as a loose plot device that keeps the primary theme in the forefront. Unfortunately, the band names, character behaviors and a few of the minor events that occur might strike teen readers as too much like an adult attempting to relate to something he knows little about. Overall, however, it is a lively read with a strong theme that can lend itself to further discussion.
Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Hopes and dreams to win recording time in a professional studio are at stake in the band battle. The Lunar Ticks, Jay on the guitar, Kel on the bass, and Cia on the drums, are a band that is rehearsing for the opportunity to record a studio CD. The group nails their musical numbers and wins their school's band battle giving them a spot in the finals of the battle of the bands. Their rival will be Indigo Daze, a band that has beaten them in previous battles. Jay is attracted to Rowan Raynor of Indigo Daze. She not only has a special touch with the guitar and a voice to match, but she understands Jay. On the day of the band battle, the Indigo Daze's members cast a suspicious eye on Jay because they believe that he trashed Rowan's guitar in order to remove The Lunar Ticks' competition. The story moves at a quick pace with some surprises. This easy-to-read book is part of the "Orca Soundings" series dealing with young adult interests and topics.

Gr 9 Up
Suburban Vancouver teen Jay lives for his band's rehearsals. The Lunar Ticks are practicing for an upcoming Battle of the Bands that will match them against a neighboring high school's standout, Indigo Daze. Jay's growing crush on its lead singer adds a layer of romance to the story. The members of the band get into and out of trouble and into and out of fights with one another, and the group is ultimately successful at the competition (even though they don't win). The characters are edgy but likable. The short chapters and fast-paced, rock-themed action will appeal to reluctant and struggling readers, particularly those who are serious about their music.

Read an Excerpt

The smell in the garage is lousy. Old bulbs coated with years of dust and cobwebs don't cast the best light either. But when I pick up my guitar and my fingers find the strings, and that first riff comes screaming out of the amp, the only thing that matters is sound.

Jay, Kel & Cia make up the band, The Lunar Ticks. They play well enough to win every competition at their high school, but can't seem to come on top when competing against other bands in the community. Jay is accused of smashing the guitar of a girl in another band the night before their bands are scheduled to go head-to-head. The author weaves romance, jealousy, and death into the story.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS centers around Jay, who is trying to win a band competition. The only problem is that the girl of his dreams is also competing!

While all of this drama is going on, Kel and Cia (another member of the band) start going out!

And Jay and his midnight sneak-outs are getting a little out of hand.

Will Jay win the competition and get the girl?

That is for you to find out by reading BATTLE OF THE BANDS, a fun, short story.
