Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
This retelling begins before the gods ruled Mount Olympus. Enormous giants, Titans, ruled the world. The leader, Cronus, fears losing his power so he swallows his children when they are babies. His wife, Rhea, tricks Cronus when baby Zeus is born. She presents a rock to Cronus which he swallows; Zeus goes to Crete where he is raised by a fairy goat. When Zeus becomes a teenager, he discovers what his father did to his brothers and sisters. Zeus plans to give a magic herb to his father so that Cronus coughs up Zeus' brothers and sisters. Zeus and his family decide to battle Cronus and the Titans. The battle between Zeus and his father could be an exciting introduction to the Greek myths. However, this picture book emphasizes the lengthiness of the battle rather than its participants. The illustrations, while colorful, appear mottled and some are too small for the event in which they appear. Donna Jo Napoli's recent collection has better illustrations and covers this myth plus several others in one volume. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk
