Overview

A girl doesn’t have a date for the school dance—until her dad makes one for her in his lab. “Lily—meet Stitchy.” A family enjoys a nice Thanksgiving dinner—until they are interrupted by a torrent of turkeys out for revenge. A princess meets a pea-brained suitor. And the battle of two red hot pepper weenies ends in flames.

Critically-acclaimed author and master of the macabre David Lubar returns from a journey into the darkest depths of his brain with thirty-five more warped and creepy tales. And in the tradition of the three previous Weenie collections—In the Land of the Lawn Weenies, Invasion of the Road Weenies, and The Curse of the Campfire Weenies—he reveals the inspiration behind each story at the end of the book. Don't be a weenie. Read these stories...if you dare!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Lubar (The Curse of the Campfire Weenies, Invasion of the Road Weenies) returns with another collection of, well, warped and creepy tales. These 36 very short stories start from anything that pops into Lubar's fertile imagination: a well-meaning inventor dad creates a made-to-order date for his lonely daughter; an enchanted mandolin's "sharp" (in both senses of the word) string foils a would-be thief; a mood ring reveals more than intended; an aspiring clown discovers the grotesque downside of his chosen profession. To paraphrase President Lincoln's alleged remark, for those who like this sort of thing, this will be the sort of thing that they like. One added bonus of the collection is an author's note at the end of the book sharing the inspirational seed of each tale: this provides a fascinating look at Lubar's creative process and bears effective testimony to the claim that ideas can come from anywhere and everywhere. Young readers may well start pouncing on promising story ideas of their own, glad that the short story form is hereby proven to be alive and well—in its own warped and creepy way! Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
School Library Journal

Gr 6-9

In this entertaining collection of three dozen short stories, Lubar creates characters who will quickly engage readers. The selections range between two and six pages in length. Some are humorous, such as the title story, which involves middle schoolers in a hot-pepper-eating contest, while others are moralistic horror tales, such as "The Ratty Old Bumbershoot," in which a boy is eaten by an umbrella that he "borrows" but has no intention of returning. Still others are science fiction, as in "Galactic Zap," in which a video game created by aliens is placed on Earth and anyone who gets good at it is eliminated to help ensure a quick takeover of the planet. Most readers will find something here to their liking.-Valerie Davis, Campbell County Public Library, Newport, KY

    I Also Recommend:

Great read for lazy readers who can't finish a novel!

As the reading specialist at my school, I've found that many of my students complain about having to read over the summer break. They frequently use the excuses of "I don't have enough time" and "novels are just to long." Here's the solution - short stories. I read "Into the Wild Blue Yonder" to a class of fifth graders and they were hooked. This book needs to be added to your home, classroom and school libraries. This book will appeal to both boys and girls. The best thing about a book with a collection of short stories - you don't have to read them all, only those that interest you and you finish a story in about 20 minutes.
