Battle of the Books and More is a comprehensive guide that makes it easy to plan and implement successful reading competitions for middle school students. Whether you are a public library youth services librarian, middle school teacher, or school library media specialist, you will find everything you need in this guide. The authors provide a complete set of questions related to both current popular titles and classics likely to be commonly available in most school and public library collections. They have also compiled useful current websites offering supplementary information about the books and authors, techniques for increasing participation in the competitions, suggestions on how to correlate the contests with music and art, advice on recognition, cooperative programming between the school and public libraries, publicizing the contests, effective use of volunteers and parents, and lots of other information to make your reading activity the very best.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Three librarians detail practical ways to get students and community on board for middle school contests with books. Currently, these competitions are being conducted successfully in schools across the nation. Not only are several adaptations of the Battle of the Books outlined but the authors also suggest other methods of getting students more involved with books. One chapter deals with creative ideas for responding to books, and another suggests ways to incorporate technology. Other chapters list practical ideas for planning book battles, down to headings for file folders. The heart of this professional resource is a list of 250 books followed by suggested URL links, subject labels, awards, study guides available for the books, and five sample questions that could be used in a book battle contest. The subject labels are of limited usefulness, as most are non-specific. A few titles also have an additional note with warnings such as mature theme, although that cautionary note seems to have been misapplied to at least one book, Nancy Farmer's The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm (Orchard, 1994/VOYA June 1994), and left off several others that could use such a label including James Howe's The Watcher (Atheneum/S & S, 1997/VOYA August 1997) and Virginia Euwer Wolff's Make Lemonade (Holt, 1993/VOYA October 1993). The authors wisely urge that a librarian or "another responsible adult [read] each book" before putting it on any list for students. If a contest involving books sounds like a good way to get middle school students more involved in reading, this extremely practical guide will propel teachers and librarians on their way. School Library Journal
An excellent resource for ideas on contests and competitions designed to motivate students to read more and enjoy what they read. While the emphasis is on the "Battle of the Books" competition, there are plenty of suggestions for other activities to use with an individual or small group, a classroom, or for a school-wide event. Helpful suggestions for organizing a competition are included, from planning the event to choosing the books and writing questions to setting up the tournaments and playoffs. However, the bulk of this resource is an impressive list of some 250 recommended titles with genre, awards (if applicable), an indication of whether study guides are available, and five questions that can be used in competitions. In addition to a list of great Web sites for librarians and students, there are reproducible bookmarks and badges. This volume was written by school library media specialists, and it is obvious that they know what makes a successful reading program succeed.-Linda Wadleigh, Oconee County Middle School, Watkinsville, GA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
From The Critics
Battle Of The Books And More provides parents with reading activities appropriate for middle school students - a difficult age to interest in reading. Use fun reading competitions to motivate and stimulate an interest in both popular titles and classics through this method, using Battle Of The Books And More, a handbook which clearly shows how to build such a competition and how to coordinate its contents with classroom pursuits for grades 5-8.
