Spanish and U.S. armies fought each other for only four months during the Spanish-American War. More U.S. soldiers died from disease and tainted meat than in actual combat. Battles of the Spanish-American War examines key battles in the brief war -- from the first battles in Santiago, Cuba, to the Spanish surrender of Puerto Rico. Battle maps, after action reports, and time lines show the importance of these battles in this "splendid little war."

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-These slim overviews are filled with illustrations: full-color and black-and-white photos and reproductions, drawings, and a few maps. In all of the books, one- to three-page chapters are introduced by a paragraph in bold print, while additional information is offered under a few subheadings. In both titles concerning battles, every discussion of a military encounter includes a time line and a boxed "After Action Report" listing the commanders, casualties, and outcome. The Soldiers volumes briefly consider important individuals and units, weapons, and more. Each book includes either "Frontier Dispatch" or "1898 Gazette" sidebars offering little-known facts. These well-organized but limited introductions will be utilized primarily for reports and will appeal to reluctant readers.-Doris Losey, Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library, Tampa, FL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
