Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
If you enjoy the chamber music of Debussy and Ravel, this album is sure to tickle your fancy. Sir Arnold Bax 1883-1953 was English, but thanks to the poetry of Yeats, he became fascinated with Irish history, language, and culture. All four works on this disc feature the harp, an instrument central to Celtic life. But while Bax's spiritual stimulus emanated from the Emerald Isle, his musical inspiration at least in these pieces came directly from the French Impressionists. All four works on this disc feature the harp, an instrument central to Celtic life. Bax was his own man, however, and if the harmonic language and rhapsodic style sounds derivative, the dark, fantastical atmosphere of his music is utterly original. To complement their ongoing and invaluable recordings of Bax's seven symphonies, Naxos gives us this exquisite collection, containing the Quintet for harp and strings; Elegiac Trio for harp, viola, and flute a worthy companion to Debussy's sonata for those instruments; Fantasy-Sonata for harp and viola; and Sonata for flute and harp. Performed with conviction and grace by Mobius, an international ensemble of young, prize-winning musicians, this disc is a terrific bargain. Hopefully, its winning combination of high quality and low price will inspire many music lovers to explore this music's beautiful, overgrown, and under-traveled paths.
