This is a well-written book that is exactly what the title describes - a way to become expert with the use of map and compass. It does not include a great deal of information about GPS other than to say that batteries and other components can fail. There is an excellent section on types of maps, but the focus is on understanding topographic maps, symbols, and conventions. There are a wealth of activities included that could be used to help newcomers to the field understand the concepts and techniques of orienteering without the risk of getting them "lost in the woods." I am very pleased with this book and hope to use it regularly with a group of scouts. Some of the activities would be so quick to set up that they could be used as "fillers" between other activities or as optional activities around the edge of a field for people wanting more practice in a certain area. Great book.
