When the Hotel Café became a nationally recognized launching pad for songwriters in 2008, Ingrid Michaelson stood out amongst artists who regularly played the venue, flaunting a confident sound that was a cut above the average female crooner. Her second indie album, Girls and Boys, made waves one year prior when it topped some digital charts, eventually selling over 740,000 copies of its lead single thanks to licensing deals with Old Navy and Grey's Anatomy. All Music Guide - Andrew Leahey
Released in 2008, Be OK continues her Norah Jones-gone-pop approach with 11 tracks. This isn't a proper studio effort -- rather, it's a benefit project with proceeds going to cancer research that takes its material from live performances, rarities, and several new tracks. Filled with handclaps and breezy guitar chords, the titular "Be OK" bookends the set list with two different versions -- one filled with harmonies, keyboards, and percussion, and the other sticking closer to an acoustic arrangement. Michaelson's voice is strong enough to carry those tracks alone, but her melodies sound strongest when flanked by harmonies, whether they're provided by the singer's own double-tracked voice or contributions from her touring bandmates. "The Chain," a longtime live favorite and perhaps the best song on this disc, even careens into a three-person round, utilizing the harmony approach better than any Michaelson track since "The Way I Am." She leads the pack, advising her ex-lover to "glide away on soapy heels" while her melodies are echoed by Bess Rogers and Allie Moss. It's a simple song, but its presentation makes all the difference -- a telltale sign of a songwriter who knows how to breathe new life into a veteran genre.

A Wonderful Purchase from a Wonderful Artist

If you have "Boys & Girls," Ingrid Michaelson's previous album, you're already familiar with the simple, emotional lyrics and the moving musical techniques that appear in her music. This album is in no way a break from this form, and for that I'm grateful. I fell in love Michaelson because she makes such beautiful, affecting music, and this album extends the library perfectly. It merges seamlessly in your music library with her previous release, forming an extension of sorts. However, there is a downside. The album is two tracks shorter than "Girls & Boys," which is a bit sad but not a big deal. However, one of the tracks on "Be OK" is a live and almost identical to the original version of "The Way I Am." Some may also be a bit turned off by the two remakes; they're both beautifully done, and "Can't Help Falling In Love," a remake of the Elvis classic, is one of my favorite Michaelson songs. However, these three tracks do theoretically take the place of three other original tracks that could potentially have appeared, so keep that in mind. Overall, these mild setbacks are barely noticeable in the grand scheme of things, and if you are already an Ingrid Michaelson fan or are looking for a new artist with a unique sound and powerful music, "Be OK" is an absolute must!

Music that speaks to your soul

I've been a fan of Ingrid's for over a year now, and I have to say this is her best album yet! The perfect blend of original songs, live recordings, and covers, this CD is a must have for any Ingrid fan or follower of the "coffeehouse" genre. Ingrid's songs are both healing and inspiring. Out of all of her great songs, my favorite tracks are "The Chain", "Lady in Spain", and "Keep Breathing". This CD is also a small taste of the fun and incredible experience of seeing Ingrid live in concert. Get yourself a copy today, and buy it as a gift for others, as a portion of the proceeds go to a great cause, Stand Up to Cancer. And don¿t miss the chance to see her live in concert!!!! Also be sure to check out the new holiday CD "The Hotel Cafe Presents...Winter Songs" which features an original duet of Ingrid with another favorite, Sara Bareilles, called "Winter Song". A portion of that album's sales goes directly to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

    Sweaters and Dancing equal perfection

I have fallen in love with the music of Ingrid Michaelson ever since I heard her first 2 albums "Slow the Rain" and "Girls and Boys". After viewing the track listing for Be OK, I first was skeptical about how successful it would be. Cover songs and live performances mixed in with a few new tunes couldn't possibly be much success, right? Wrong! Ingrid has proven once again to be a soulful and creative songwriter. Her lyrics are so easy to relate to. Her voice is so agile and versatile, which makes each song unique. Ingrid's twist on the covers "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Over the Rainbow" make them so fresh and exciting, while her new songs are catchy and tuneful. I can't stop playing "You and I" and LOVE joining in the round on "The Chain".

If you ever get the chance to see her live. . .GO!!!! She is incredible!
She is currently on her "Be OK" tour, so check it out on www.ingridmichaelson.com Her current tour and new CD are both in support of Stand Up to Cancer, so buy it!

great new CD from the best unsigned artist you'll ever hear. Check it out. If you like it (and you will), next check out her first CD called Girls and Boys. I love how original and moving her lyrics are, and the power of the melodies and harmonies. She's also one of the most gifted vocalists I've heard in a while. Good job Ingrid! Thanks for the great music.

ps - part of the profits of this CD go to charity. So if you needed another reason, buying this CD also means you are a good person :)
