“[Cesar] arrives amid chaos and leaves behind peace.”
—Malcolm Gladwell, The New Yorker
“[Millan is] serene and mesmerizing. . . . He deserves a cape and a mask.”
—New York Times
Readers expecting a typical dog training how-to or dog psychology book are going to be surprised and challenged by this new book by the host of National Geographic's Dog Whisperer. It is a compelling but sometimes confusing blend of training method, psychology, and case studies covering both canine and human partners in Millan's "pack leader" concept. The text is divided into two parts-"Balancing Your Dog" and "Balancing Ourselves"-with the most important discussions centering on discipline, reward and punishment, and the proper use of training tools and techniques. The chapters that focus on human balance and energy are going to be harder for the average person to understand or accept, although to his credit, Millan has provided several references and notes for those chapters. The appendix serves as a quick reference guide to managing common situations such as meeting a dog for the first time, dealing with obsessive and fixated behaviors, and going to the dog park. Whether you agree with his approach to training or his assessment of canine psychology, Millan's new book is worth reading. It will likely hit the best-sellers lists just as his first title, Cesar's Way, did. Highly recommended for all public libraries.
—Edell M. Schaefer

There is a reason why the editorial review finds Cesar's explanations of dog psychology and human energy confusing. It's because he completely makes stuff up. Milan has set back dog training by focusing on the alpha-pack theory. These were based on faulty research of wolf packs from the 1950s. Even the man who wrote those theories now disagrees with them. You will not have a good relationship with your dog using these methods. Please look elsewhere.

My dogs are 11 Months, 3 years and 12 years and the techniques worked with all three of them. It was amazing how much of a pack leader I had neglected to be. This book has truly changed how I handle everything in my life!! Calm Assertive is the only way to be!!! This is a must read for anyone who owns a dog or needs leadership skills!!

I have read both of Cesar's books now and have really learned a lot from him. His techniques have changed my dogs life. His 1st was a lesson in dog behavior and how to deal with their issues that usually lead to bad behavior. This new book helps both the dog and the human by establishing how to be the leader in your dogs life. He gives many examples of how to be a calm assertive leader as well as why this state of mind is so important. I REALLY recommend this book to all dog owners.

These methods have no scientific backing. Would not recommened his methods. These methods are based on adversives, that are harmful to dogs. They do not build a relationship between owner and dog! People may think their dogs are well behaved, but it is out of fear. No way, no how would use CM training. Run the other way and find a good positve reinforcement trainer.
