A trip to the beach without the travel

Get away for a few hours and delve between the virtual sandy pages for a seacoast vacation.

Beach Chair Diaries: Summer Tales from Maine to Maui brings you to the seashore, the waves, and the sunshine. From Wells Beach, Maine to the surf in Hawaii

The cover attracted me to this book first: an image of beach chair on a sandy beach in front of the surf. It reminded me of my summers at a beach house in Maine. The title caught my attention next. Beach. Chair. Diaries. All one needs to totally get away (in my opinion) is a soft-sanded beach, a comfortable chair (or blanket), and a book. And the icing on the cake is the book itself. The writing is conversational and runs the gamut on emotions. I laughed out loud in places and got lost in my own thoughts after reading passages that brought me back to my favorite beach.

There's a bit of an ache now, for knowing how many summers I haven't been to the beach. But there's a renewed sense of awe and appreciation for how rejuvenating and memorable a day at the beach can be. The author had fun writing this book, it's apparent in how she shares her passion for the beach. She wants to bring the beach to the reader, and I think she has done just that.

Janet Spurr is the quintessential Beach Queen and has surfed, boogie boarded, snorkeled, kayaked, sailboat raced against the Kennedys, motor boated, white water rafted the Kennebec River, and swum in seven of the top ten beaches in the U.S. She has lived on Nantucket Island and currently lives in a seashore community.

Beach Chair Diaries is a great, fun read any time of year. If you've loved being on the beach and haven't been in a while, this will bring you back to the surf. If you've never been to a beach, you'll want to plan a trip after reading this book.

Jane E. Spur shares her humor and her love for the beach with readers.

Jane E. Spur shares her humor and her love for the beach with readers. She writes in a conversational style. I could picture myself sitting across a patio table from her, sipping a drink with a tiny umbrella, while we discussed her latest beach escapade. I was laughing aloud at her story of the blow up boat. I could see her blowing up that boat. The story about the surfing lesson is a classic. Spur must be a hoot to be around. She is the kind of friend we all need, one that will make us laugh even if it takes black shoe polish. Beach Chair Diaries is a must-read.

Reflections on the warmth and slower pace of summertime

I normally do not review a book after reading just fifty pages, but life events got in the way. Thus, I have had to set aside Beach Chair Diaries, though the infectious humor contained in the first essay stays with me. ¿Surfer Girl¿ is an account of author Janet Spurr¿s strenuous and wonderful midlife achievement¿and I found myself applauding her pursuit of a long-held dream. The essays I read are warm and entertaining, and Janet captures a variety of summer beach experiences. The accounts are followed by thoughtful ¿Low Tide Times,¿ which encourage readers to think about and act on their own dreams 'while Janet cheers them on!'. Reviewed by Marie Mead, author 'with collaborator Nancy LaRoche' of Rabbits: Gentle Hearts, Valiant Spirits ¿ Inspirational Stories of Rescue, Triumph, and Joy

    Who needs to get sandy?

I may live half an hour from the beach, but Ms Spurr's book means that I can enjoy all the fun of the beach and the scenery 'including the surfing hunks' without wasting gas and getting sand in my swimsuit. Great debut collection, can't wait for more stories from this break out author.

A Little Bit of Summer in a Lively Little BooK

Reading Janet E. Spurr's 'Beach Chair Diaries:Summer Tales from Maine to Maui' is like taking a mini vacation. On a recent hectic afternoon I picked up this book and almost immediately heard the call of the sea. Spurr's warm travel anecdotes and funny stories about life near the ocean had me laughing and imagining cool waves lapping at my toes while my blood pressure dropped. Questions for personal reflection and some practical tips at the end of each chapter brought the carefree joy of Summer a little bit closer. This is a fun book to dip into and also share with friends.

I enjoyed immensely reading Ms. Spurr's wonderful essays on the joys and passions of sun worshipping and enjoyins life while sitting in a beach chair. This book is guaranteed to put a smile on your face as you recall the wonderful memories of your own beachgoing experience. Right on Spurr and pass the sunscreen!
