Overview

Beach houses are the ideal getaway homes, offering the peace and relaxation of living near water, the fun of hanging out on the beach, and the total change of environment from city life. Selected from the pages of "Fine Homebuilding, this book provides inspiration for anyone dreaming of such a home, plus practical guidance for designing and building in this often-challenging environment. Chosen for their variety of styles and settings, these outstanding examples range from Northwest eclectic in Seattle to an elegant houseboat in Rhode Island, from the quintessential California beach house to an oceanfront classic in Nantucket, and from a kick-back Floridian cottage to a charming Canadian retreat. Throughout the book, photographs, floor plans, drawings, and expert building information give a full picture of the possibilities for living at the beach.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Beaches are one of the most popular vacation spots, and, for many, owning a house on one would be a dream come true. Dreamers as well as those with deep pockets will enjoy this collection of 17 articles, originally published in Fine Homebuilding magazine. All are designed by top architects and appear to be quite comfortable; several entries are of greater interest because they show how the house was built to withstand harsh environmental factors (one home built on an exposed location features log buttresses to help it withstand Pacific storms). Books of this type are frequently no more than vanity exercises for architects (in this book, one boasts that he thought "the building turned out all right," even though he exceeded his budget and defied his client's wishes), but the featured homes are beautiful. The text is supplemented with floor plans, illustrations of significant design features, and a profusion of color photos. Appropriate for larger public libraries, especially those in coastal areas or that serve an upscale clientele. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
