Beagle: A Howling Good Time

Overview

Before travelers at Miami International Airport could board their flights, airport workers had to examine their bags. Everyone was rushing about, except for a worker named Trouble. He calmly walked along, carefully sniffing each suitcase. Suddenly, he sat down next to a bag. He'd smelled something coming from it that he didn't like. What important discovery had Trouble made that would help protect his home state of Florida?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
Beagle: A Howling Good Time is part of the "Little Dogs Rock!" series of books by Bearport Publishing geared to the 7- to 12-year-old child interested in learning more about small dog breeds. The book is filled with a variety of interesting chapters, including "A Nose For Trouble," which describes the true story of the Beagle Brigade comprised of beagles and their handlers who sniff bags at airports to detect illegal fruits and plants being brought into the United States. "A Canine Hero" describes the Beagle, "Trouble," who found fruit containing Mediterranean fruit flies that could have destroyed Florida's orange groves. "Nothing But a Hound Dog" details the breed's history. "Sounds of the Hounds" and "The Westminster Dog Show" describe the great degree of popularity this breed enjoys. The Westminster Dog Show chapter includes the 2008 Best in Show win by a three-year-old Beagle named "Uno." "A Closer Look," "The Merry Dogs," and "The Nose Knows" open discussion topics about this breed's maintenance and care requirements. This book may be a good starting point for the child considering adding a Beagle to the family. "The World's Most Famous Beagle" and "Underdog" chapters describe Snoopy and Underdog, two very well known beagles. The final pages featuring "Beagles at a Glance" and "Best in Show" give basic details on life expectancy, weight, personality, and even the things a judge would look for in the dog show ring. The 27-word glossary includes many words that are not directly related to the Beagle. The bibliography, "Read More" section, and "Learn More Online" pages offer opportunities for further study and research and may require assistance.
