I was cautious about getting this book at first because I thought it would be a tearjerker with beagles ending up in nasty fates. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a gripping mystery set in a pet rescue operation. The author does not advertise who the murderer is in the first few pages. Instead, it was not until the end of the book that the murderer was revealed. It was also interesting to read how the pet rescue organization in the story was set up.

This was just a fun and delightful who-done-it puppy caper mystery. I am a pet lover, so that made the book all that much better. Not only is there pet love, but the book has mystery, romance, and lots and lots of animals. There is also lots of mystery, I loved the way I was kept guessing right until the end who was the guilty person. This is the first book I've read by this author, Linda O. Johnston, and I was not disappointed, I understand this is the first book of a series, however, it was a stand alone book also. I will be looking forward to reading another book by this author. This is my favorite kind of reading, pets, mystery, and a bit of romance. I liked it so much I awarded it 5***** This book is part of my Nook Library.

"Beaglemania" is the first in the new Pet Rescue Mystery Series from Linda O. Johnston, the well-known creator of the popular Pet-Setter Mysteries. It's easy to tell the author has a soft spot for all sorts of animals, big and small, and even human, especially if they are extra kind to animals. Unfortunately, not all humans are, as Lauren Vancouver-head of HotRescues, a no-kill animal shelter-discovers all too often. At a particularly nasty puppy mill, Lauren helps rescue four adorable beagle puppies that were dumped down a storm drain, and she's pretty sure she knows whodunit. Lauren discovers Efram Kiley, one of HotRescue's employees (he's doing community service to atone for past instances of dog abuse), at the puppy mill and is convinced he's responsible for this latest example of animal cruelty. Efram shows up at HotRescues and threatens her. When Efram is found dead at the shelter (guess who finds him!), Lauren becomes the prime suspect. In trying to clear her own name, Lauren discovers more suspects than she bargained for, including a member or two of her own staff. A promising beginning to a cute series. But I couldn't help but wonder.what happened to the beagles? Once they're rescued from the storm drain, we don't hear from them any more. I hope they found a good home. This is the first book in a new series by Linda O. Johnston that introduces Lauren Vancouver, head of HotRescues, a no-kill animal shelter in north Los Angeles. Vancouver helps rescue beagle puppies that were dumped down a drainpipe near a notorious puppy mill. She has a confrontation with one of the mill's employees who then threatens her, but when he's found dead at HotRescues, Lauren becomes the prime suspect. She sets out to prove her innocence and in the process becomes the target of the real killer. As a fan of mysteries featuring female sleuths, I liked this introduction to the new series. It is a light read and somewhat predictable with the inevitable romance brewing between Vancouver and one of the investigators. However, there were enough suspects to keep me guessing until the end. I'm not sure how far one can go with the theme of pet-rescue and murder, but I'm willing to read future titles in the series to find out. I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited nor required. If I didn't like the book I would say so.

Near Los Angeles, HotRescues is a no-kill shelter for dogs and other animals founded by billoinaire Dante DeFrancisco, owner of a series of pet stores that which carries items manufactured and carried in his HotPets stores. He is the biggest contributor to HotRescues and though he is a billionaire he has a heart of gold. As part of a legal settlement Efram Kiley works at HotRescues, learning how to treat and care for animals for which he was paid a large sum of money in a legal settlement with Dante. HotRescues director Lauren Vancouver is horrified to see Efron at a dirty and diseased puppy mill where he pushes beagle puppies into a drain pipe. When he turns up at HotRescues, Lauren fires him. Soon afterward, she sees his body in HotRescues with a knife in his chest. She becomes the number one suspect. When she is injured twice in potentially deadly incidents, the cops assume she set them up to make her look a victim, innocent of murder. Knowing the police are going to arrest her, she tries to ferret out the real killer. Dante's lover Kendra Ballantine makes a cameo appearance that connects this new series to the Pet Sitter amateur sleuth novels; this adds a sense of continuity though on a different path. Linda O. Johnson fans will compare the two leading ladies; as Laura is more mature and independent than Kendra is but both are feisty, obstinate and passionate about animals. The mystery is cleverly devised even with the cops acting more Keystone than professional as in their mind the case solved. Pet Sitter readers will enjoy this similar yet different canine thriller.
